St. Malachy Athletic Committee Meeting September 23, 2007 7:00 p.m. Parish Conference Center Attendees: Mike Arnould , Scott Hanny, David Bratton, Tom Gliva, Clay Courtney, Annette Vassilo, Sister Barbara Reder Minutes: The previous meeting minutes were accepted. Treasure’s Report: Physicals and Football Condition Camp proceeds have been deposited Football equipment expenses are close but still under budget Cheerleading is stay well under budget The Athletic Committee received $1822 from the DeChant endowment The Athletic Committee received $2200 from the St. Malachy endowment toward new bleachers Clay has applied for a USA Football endowment Clay has applied to Dick Sporting Good for support of our baseball program An estimate, for outfitting the baseball program, was obtained from Arena Sports. The total cost would be approximately $1200. The baseball program has a John McCraken donation of $800 towards the cost of upgrading the program. A motion was made and accepted to fund the remainder of the cost, approximately $400, to upgrade the existing baseball program. An estimate, for outfitting a girls’ softball program, was obtained from Arena Sports. The total cost was approximately $1200. No action will be taken at this time toward the potential girls’ softball program. A registration reimbursement policy was discussed for injury, low grades and change of mind. The policy will be discussed at the next meeting for possible finalization. One point of policy was agreed upon. The student athlete is not considered to be registered until the fee has been received. Currently such student athletes will be allowed to practice, but will not receive their jerseys or be allowed to participate in any games. Family Life and Social Concerns Committee: The Parish Council has proposed to split the Family Life and Social Concerns into two Commissions. The Parish Council was considering having the Athletic Committee answer directly to the Parish Council. Sister Barbara brought this proposal in front of the Athletic Committee. After discussion, the Athletic Committee thought this was a good proposal. Mike Arnould will attend the October Parish Council meeting and the Athletic Committee would like to make a presentation at the December Parish Council meeting. Child Safety: Mike brought up the correspondences from the CYO about suspicious individuals at CYO events and reiterated the need to be vigilant in protecting the student athletes. Adult Volleyball: Adult Volleyball donated $65 to the Athletic Committee. Sports Updates- Football: Cadet team is doing well, with a record of 3 – 0 6th Grade team has a record of 0 – 3 5th Grade team record was unknown 4th Grade team has a record of 3 – 0 3rd Grade team has a record of 0 – 3 Fall Kickball: The Cadets suffered a loss of 14-10 in the city finals. The 4th grade team made it to the semi-finals. Cross Country: Cross Country fees have been fully paid. The Committee will send and e-mail or letter to the Damlers about future expectation of Sport Coordinators. There is a possibility that 3rd graders will not be allow to participate in the CYO meet. If this occurs, the four 3rd graders will receive a full refund of their $38 fee. Cheerleading: All fees and registrations are in. Basketball cheer registration will begin in October Girl’s Basketball: Evaluations are completed. A majority of feedback about evaluations was positive, with negative feedback on the placement of one girl. The girl was not present for evaluations and the family did not believe the final placement was appropriate. She decided not to play. All but 2 coaches are Virtus trained. They will be completing training in the next few days. The names of the student athletes have been turned into the CYO. There are 57 participants. 16 new basketballs have been purchased. One non-parishioner is participating. Mike and Clay made it know that they do not think that a non-parishioner should be on an A level team and be able to bump a parishioner of the team. The Athletic Committee generally agreed. Boys’ Basketball: Evaluations will be held: Cadet: October 8th from 6 – 9 5th/6th: October 15th from 6 – 9 4th: Not yet scheduled Registered student athletes: Cadet: 38 5th/6th: 34 4th: 13 Registration for teams to the CYO is October 12th. Girls’ Volleyball: Registrations are on the web and will be to the school by this week. CYO registration deadline is December 11th. The Committee would like to ensure that the evaluation process is run in the same way as the basketball evaluations were. Wrestling: Registrations are on the web and will be to the school by this week. The committee will look into uniform replacement this year, since there is budget earmarked for replacement. Virtus: Girls’ Basketball will be 100% trained by 9-24. Website: Student athletes names on the website are to listed as first name and last initial for anonymity. Gym Scoreboard: John Pole will look at it and try to fix it. First Aid Kits: The first aid kits need to be replenished. David Bratton will look into a company that replenishes first aid supplies on-site on a periodic basis. Bylaws and Job Descriptions: It was proposed that the Athletic Committee schedule a meeting for the sole purpose of discussing job descriptions and Bylaw changes. Assistand AD: Elections for the Assistant Athletic Director will be held at the next meeting on October 28th. Clay nominated Tom O’Leary. Other nominations may be made to Mike Arnould via e-mail. New Church Site: Mike and Clay will be starting a sub-committee for the purposes of interacting with the Building Committee about sports’ field at the new site.
