St. Malachy Athletic Committee Meeting January 27, 2008 7:00 p.m. Parish Conference Center Attendees: Mike Arnould , Sister Barbara Reder, Scott Hanny, David Bratton, Tom Gliva, Tom O’Leary, Clay Courtney, Kevin Thomas, Randy Schmidt, Terri Fech, Annette Vasillo Minutes: The previous meeting minutes were accepted. Treasure’s Report: Dick's Sporting Goods have donated $300 in bonus certificates, 5 dozen baseballs and 5 girls' softball helmets. Based on the budget and income, Clay is recommending donating $2100 toward the Green and White Gala. The amount found in the account mentioned in the last meeting was $1255. The mat transporters for wrestling are on order, but have not yet arrived. Clay has created a PowerPoint presentation on the CYO Sport Costs. He will be making it available for the parents and to be put on the website to better educate the parents on the costs associated with each sport. Virtus Training: All but one coach is Virtus trained. The remaining coach will be attending the next available session. Concessions: Things are going well. Coke prices went up as of the first of the year. Some things increased as much as 50%. Randy and Clay believe our contract with Coke has expired. Clay will investigate whether the contract has expired. Parish Council: Parish mission week will have a penance service on Thursday February 28th. We are being asked to have no practice on that day and reduce the number of the practices during the mission week. CYO Correspondence Nothing of note. Website: The volleyball schedules have been put online. The Spring Sport registrations are also on the website. The registration deadline is February 8th. Scott is contact Lori Koontz to ask her to put the registration forms in the Friday folders for the students and to make an announcement about the deadline. The website will be updated with the application forms for the Spirit of Youth, Busald and Bosco awards. Upcoming Events: February 4th is the first wrestling meet. The weigh in is February 16th. February 24th is the next Athletic Committee meeting. March 7th is the deadline for turning in Award applications to the CYO. Sports Updates- Boys’ Basketball: There is one possibly two teams still in tournament play. The Cadets are at the semi-final level. We are participating in a non-CYO instructional league at St. Christopher's, but the games do not seem to be instructional. We will be pulling out due to the severe competitiveness. (David has contacted the Director of the St. Chris league and they have made arrangements that will offer the players more competitive games. The players families have been contacted and wish to stay with the program). Girls’ Volleyball: The season started January 26th. Terri brought up the issue that she and a few other parents did not believe that 4 of the 5 evaluators should have parents and coaches of participating student athletes. She thought that there were other more qualified to do the evaluations that would not be biased. The Athletic Committee held discussion and will take this under advisement in the future. Wrestling: There have been 3 to 4 practice so far. Spring Kickball: Terri may bring up 3rd graders to the 4th grade team, if there are an insufficient number of 4th graders. She was short last season. Baseball: Clay will contact other West Deanery schools who don’t have baseball programs to see if there is any interest in playing on our baseball teams. The players will only be used if it is necessary to fill two Cadet teams. Soccer: Randy Schmidt has a number of coaches lined up. Softball: Kevin has tentative approval to use the Pittsboro fields, but no confirmation. If he can get confirmation, he will send out paper in the Friday folders. He will move forward, if there is interest. But the deadline for CYO registrations is February 22nd. Football: Jim Yetter has agreed to be the Football coordinator next year. CYO City Trophies: The trophies for the 4th grade kickball team have been delivered to the coach. First Aid Kits: The first aid kits have been replenished, but the CYO checklist needs to be checked against to ensure we are up to standards Gym Banners: Scott is awaiting additional information from the school office. Football equipment purchase: The equipment is on order and needs to have the design finalized. Gym time: Kevin wondered if there was a mandate that basketball gets only full court practices, while volleyball shares the court with another team. There is not, but at the Cadet level, at least, this is the general practice. Brownsburg facility use: Clay will fill out the forms for formal request for use of Brownsburg School facilities for baseball, softball, track, etc. Noll Hall flooring: Flooring is being actively chosen and will likely be installed during the summer. Next Meeting: The next meeting will by Sunday February 24th at 7:00 pm at the parish conference room.
