St. Malachy Athletic Committee Meeting February 24, 2008 7:00 p.m. Parish Conference Center Attendees: Mike Arnould , Sister Barbara Reder, Scott Hanny, David Bratton, Tom Gliva, Tom O’Leary, Clay Courtney, Kevin Thomas, Randy Schmidt, Annette Vasillo, Mike Zimmerman, Joe Gruber Minutes: The previous meeting minutes were accepted. Treasure’s Report: Gym rental this year is slightly over budget even after approving up to $3000, for gym time. The Brownsburg Junior Athletic Foundation donated $500 to the Athletic Committee. The Foundation's mission is to help athletes participate in sports, when they would not otherwise be able to afford the cost. Bill Estes Ford may be making a donation in return for signage in the gym. Concessions: There is now a hot dog steamer in the concession stand. It was donated by Stone Snyder's mom. The Coke contract has expired. Randy is getting supplies from Gordon Foods and other locations. Parish Council: Nothing of note. CYO Correspondence Nothing of note. Sports Updates- Girls’ Volleyball: The season ends on Tuesday and tournament play starts on Wednesday. One coach was addressed about using inappropriate language. Kevin has made an assessment and believes a Cadet C team would have been appropriate. Wrestling: There are two meets this coming weekend. Tournament will be the following weekend. Spring Kickball: There will be two teams. One 4th grade and one 5/6. Track: The deadline for the team entry is February 25th. Mike Zimmerman will be taking individual registrations until the weekend after Spring Break. Mike will have the School announce that Track registration is still open. Brownsburg has tracks available for use at Middle East and West schools. The West is preferable due to the presence of restrooms. Baseball: Brownsburg filed are available for use on Friday evenings and all day Sunday. 1 team of 12 or 13 will be entered. Soccer: Eric Schoenfeld will coaching the 8th grade team. Randy Schmidt is coaching the 7th grade team. Nancy Dorsa is coaching the 6th grade team. John Groth is coaching the 5th grade team. There can be additional athletes for all teams except 7th. Randy asked whether the soccer teams could practice in the gym due to weather. The committee had no problem with this. Softball: 12 or 13 girls are interested. Brian Roy, Tom Spindler and Kevin Thomas will be coaching. Pittsboro has made their fields available. The committee voted and unanimously approved the creation of a softball team. Kevin has told the parents the fee will be $100 - $110. The girls will be provided with T-shirts. Clay will order some helmets, 2 sets of catcher equipment and some ball and bats. Virtus Training: All but one soccer coach is Virtus trained. Website: The winning Cadet A team's picture was put on the website. Upcoming Events: March 7th is the deadline for turning in Award applications to the CYO. March 15th is the beginning of the Wrestling Tournament. March 25th is the new and spring sports coach meeting at 5:15 at the CYO center. April 8th is the Track coach meeting. April 9th is the beginning of baseball, soccer and softball season. April 13th is the beginning of the track season. April 14th is the beginning of the kickball season. Gym Banners: Scott will move forward with updating the current banners. Noll Hall floor: Nothing of note. Shamrock Field repair: Ash Wednesday a couple of cars damaged the field. The Parish Center will pay for the repair. They will have Brownsburg Landscape do the repair. Scoreboard: Mike made repairs and they seem to be solid. Green & White 'M's: Susan Thomas will need to get student participation information from Bobbie Hanny. New Site Field Planning: Tom O'Leary is contacting the office. New Business: Joe suggested a basketball clinic for 1st grader during the summer. Possibly covering 2nd grade and kindergarten. Joe will contact David Bratton and Clay Courtney to determine whether this is feasible. Susan Thomas suggests putting a half page ad in the Yearbook congratulating the Cadet basketball boys for City and Division championships. Severe weather procedure has been modified. Keypad access to the cafeteria hallway will be matched to the gym doors. The hallway door is not to be accessed except in case of emergency. Award Nominations: The following where put forward as possible nominees for the Busald award: Randy Schmidt, Terri Fech, Angie Sturm, Mike Fouch, Val Fouch, Mark Vasillo, Tom Zupansic and Andy Bratton. The committee voted and the three nominees that will be put forward to the CYO will be Andy Bratton, Randy Schmidt and Tom Zupansic. Nominees for the St. John Bosco award were Mark Best and Lori McFarland. Lori McFarland will be put forward by the committee. Next Meeting: The next meeting will by Sunday April 13th at 7:00 pm at the parish conference room.
